Here’s Why I’ve Been Journaling My Whole Life
Journaling has been my primary form of self-therapy for as long as I can remember.
I’ve been told many times in my life that I am a great writer and that I have a way with words. How did I even get to that point? I’ve been journaling my deepest fears, darkest days, joyous moments, and earth-shattering realizations since I knew how to put pen to paper. My diary became my first best friend.
When I was eight years old, I would go to school and get picked on, called four eyes or brownie (just thinking about that insult now makes me laugh, brownies are delicious). I had nowhere to put the feelings that arose from those experiences except on the lines of a white paper. When I sat in my room at night and poured my soul out, my pen turned into this magic wand that helped me make sense of what was going on inside of me.
My main focus during the process was observing what happened, discussing the reality of the situation, and expressing my feelings about it. I validated my own experience by witnessing and feeling it at the same time. Fast forward and I still write today. There are times when I engage with my journal through a poetic lens, other times I…
