I saw a text come in from best friend back home and I opened it thinking it was about her upcoming wedding. I clicked on it with excitement and and an article with pictures of my English teacher from high school popped open. My brows furrowed while I tried to read the text above the beautiful photographs of him smiling wide and showing off his love for cycling. As I read the text my heart dropped. You know the feeling when something terrible happens to someone you know and your entire body feels like it pushes out energy leaving you with emptiness?

My confident and influential English teacher had died in a cycling accident. That’s it. Gone. I hadn’t spoken to Mr. Moore since I last saw him three years ago at my mom’s school picnic, but still this hurt. My last memory of him was the palpable love in his eyes as he spoke about his teenage son and how he ended up in the hospital during a trip they took together due to a skateboarding mishap. I nodded my head and listened as he told me of the broken bones and the Punjabi doctor who ended up helping his son.

I always loved Mr. Moore. He wrote me letters of recommendation for college, revised my graduation speech until we both knew it was “perfect”, and was there whenever I needed him. I pushed myself to be the best I could be in his…
